Seminar about On dock System Activation was held

The Korea Trade Association held the seminar "Activation methods on t
he on-dock system in the Port of Pusan" in the Pusan Trade Center las
t May 3. Nam Kichan, a professor of Korea Maritime University, insisit
ed in subject research that if on dock system - stevedoring, classifi
cation and storage of cargoes is available inside the dock and activat
ed, there would be savings in dock logistic expenditures (about 29,000
won per teu). Such a system would avoid unnecessary trips to the off
dock container yards (ODCY) as well as be more competive for the trade
industries by expediting the cargo handling process. It might affect
downtown Pusan traffic by getting rid of unnecessary shuttles.
Professor Nam said that if the on dock handling rate increased to 80%
from its present 45%, and some ODCY near ports with container yards (C
Y) were included in the teminal CY, then 94.7 billion won would be sav
ed in logistic expenditures, each year, as well as 18.4 billion won in
social expenses.
