Container surges at Yangsan ICD
Container cargoes handled in the Yangsan ICD (Inland Container Depot) during January to May this year increased by 409 percent to 427,000 TEU compared to 83,944 TEU in the same period last year. Total cargoes last year amounted to 569,695 TEU.
Even though Yangsan ICD was confronted by a lack of rail facilities, no container exclusive road between the Port of Pusan and the ICD, and an overall domestic inbound and outbound container cargoes decrease, it managed to get back on track by handling over 80,000 TEU monthly.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries predicted that it would handle over 1 million TEU by the end of this year if this level of activity continues.
Full containers constituted around 26 percent, or 111,000 TEU, by May and empty containers reached about 74 percent, or 316,000 TEU.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries anticipated that the third highway to directly connect the Yangsan ICD with the Port of Pusan will open by this September, an information intelligence system will be established by the end of July, and one more CFS (Container Freight Station) will be added to the current three CFSs.
