Evergreen gets new vice president
Mr Kuo Shiuan-Yu has been appointed Chairman of Evergreen Marine Corporation (Taiwan) Ltd, one of the world's top three container shipping lines. He succeeds Mr Lin Sun-san who has been promoted to the new position of Vice Group Chairman of the Evergreen Group. The appointment was made following EMC's shareholders meeting on 20 June, 2001.
A qualified master mariner, Mr Kuo joined Evergreen in September 1970, just two years after the company was established. He served aboard several of the company's vessels before coming ashore in 1974.
In late 1974, he was transferred to the company's New York office and apart from a short spell in London in 1978/80 overseeing the launch of the company's North European service, he stayed on the US East Coast until 1998. His last two and a half years in the US was as Chairman of Evergreen America Corp.
In mid 1998, Mr Kuo returned to Taipei as Chairman of Evergreen Sky Catering Corp, a company founded in 1993 and currently providing catering services to more than a dozen airlines from a purpose-built facility at Taipei's CKS International Airport.
S S Lin joined Evergreen Marine Corporation in 1974 and was appointed Executive Vice President in 1977, President in 1982 and Vice Chairman in 1988. In 1993 he became Chairman of Evergreen Marine Corporation.
During the past few years, he has been active on a number of fronts, for example serving as Chairman of the National Association of Chinese Shipowners, a role which saw him involved with the Taiwan Strait Shipping Association which has sought to develop improved shipping links between Taiwan and mainland China.
