Hanjin Shipping to Add First Two of Seven 5,500TEU-Class Container Ves
sels into Pendulum Service (PDM 1)
On November 12th 1999, the first two of a series of seven 5,600TEU-cla
ss container ships chartered by Hanjin Shipping from German finance an
d ship owning concern Contl Reederei were named “Hanjin Amsterdam and
Hanjin Copenhagen.”
The Hanjin Amsterdam and Hanjin Copenhagen will be deployed within the
United Alliance’s PS-Pendulum Asia, Europe and North America service
, on November 16th and December 21th, respectively. This makes the fir
st time Hanjim has embarked on charter hire of such large containershi
ps. The deal in to run for five years.
Built by Hanjin Heavy industries, the containerships will have improve
d service speeds compared with the vessels they will replace. With a h
ighly fuel-efficient Sulzer engine that is capable of operating at a s
peed of more then 26.8knots, both vessels have lengths of 279 metres,
a width of 41 metres and depth of 24 metres - ensuring maximum carryin
g capacity with the lowest operating costs. The two new vessels will r
eplace DSR-Senator and Cho Yang chartered 4,500TEU vessels, which will
switch to the United Alliance’s Pendulum II Service.
The introduction of the two new vessels is in line with Hanjin’s cont
inuing policy of modernizing its fleet, and offering its customers exc
ellent and personalized service. With an average age of 3 years, Hanji
n currently has one of the youngest fleets among its competitors. Hanj
in will introduce three more vessels in 2000 and two more in 2001.
