In a joint effort to restore natural ecosystems and promote biodiversity, Wan Hai Lines partnered with the National Park Service to host a tree-planting event at Banping Mountain in Shoushan National Nature Park. The initiative brought together local customers, suppliers, and employees from Kaohsiung to contribute hands-on support to ecological restoration. Under this collaboration with the National Nature Park Headquarters, Wan Hai plans to plant 8,200 trees over the course of six years within Shoushan National Nature Park. Each planting area will be maintained for a three-year period. In 2025, the initiative will focus on planting 1,450 trees in the Banping Mountain region.
Previously a cement mining site, Banping Mountain was later reforested with fast-growing non-native species such as Leucaena leucocephala and Bauhinia variegata to accelerate greening. While these species grew quickly, they resulted in a simplified forest structure that reduced ecological resilience and increased the risk of pests and wildfires. The tree-planting effort focuses on mitigating the ecological pressure caused by invasive species, instead introducing native species such as Ficus nervosa, Ficus microcarpa, Hydrangea aspera, Machilus thunbergii, and Mallotus japonicus. These species were carefully selected based on the region’s elevated coral reef terrain and its distinct dry and wet seasons, aiming to restore the native forest ecosystem. The event was led by Wan Hai Lines Chair Mr. Po-Ting Chen, Director General of the National Park Service Mr. Cheng-Gi Wang, and Director of the National Nature Park Headquarters Mr. Teng-Wen Chang. Participants planted a variety of native saplings, laying the groundwork for long-term forest restoration.
Over time, this initiative aims to develop a replicable model for converting Leucaena-dominated forest areas, contributing lasting ecological benefits to Shoushan National Nature Park. Chair Chen remarked that through collaboration with the National Park Service, Wan Hai hopes to accelerate the pace of reforestation—planting trees one by one, bringing the forest back to life. Environmental stewardship has always been one of Wan Hai Lines’ core values. This is also Wan Hai’s seventh tree-planting event. Since launching the Wan Hai Planting Tree Project in 2022, the company has partnered with the National Park Service, the Forestry Administration, and the National Taiwan University Experimental Forest. To date, Wan Hai has planted and supported the maintenance of over 600,000 trees, with approximately 350,000 already planted.
These trees are estimated to absorb around 4,200 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, reflecting the company’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability. The Wan Hai Planting Tree Project is dedicated to restoring natural ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity, while also promoting greater public awareness of the relationship between trees and the environment. Wan Hai believes that every tree-planting activity is not only a step toward greening the land, but also a starting point for inspiring broader participation in sustainability and deepening the connection between people and nature. Looking ahead, Wan Hai Lines will continue to embrace energy efficiency and carbon reduction as key strategies, while deepening its environmental initiatives and advancing the well-being of employees and seafarers. Guided by the principle of “thriving with nature and prospering with society,” Wan Hai remains committed to safeguarding a healthy environment for both present and future generations.
