Shipbuilding Industry Orders Leap 400 Percent During First Half

The first half-year orders jumped four fold over the same period of la
st year, the Korea Shipbuilding Industry Association reported. Accordi
ng to reports released by the association, domestic shipyards received
orders for 192 vessels, or 6,592,640g/t showing a 421 percent increas
e compared to last year's orders for 57 vessels, or 1,566,077g/t.
Out of the 192 vessels ordered this year, only 2 vessels were from dom
estic shipping lines while the others will be exported to internationa
l shipping lines. Ninety-eight vessels were built during this period,
all of which are to be exported. This indicated a jump of 129 percent
during this period. 482 vessels have remained unbuilt as of the end of
June.
