[ Wallenius Lines Takes Delivery of Tenth Ship from Korea ]
On October 13th, Wallrnius Lines took delivery of another specially b
uilt car-carrier, MV MIGNON, from the Daewoo Okpo Shipyard in Korea.
The new vessel will be a PCTC ship (Pure Car Truck Carrier) capable o
f taking up to 5,850 cars or a combination of 3,000 cars and 475 heavy
vehicles. The vehicles can be loaded quickly and efficiently onto the
ship’s thirteen decks via an internal ramp system. Some decks are st
rengthened to take heavy vehicles, and the height of others is adjusta
ble for high units.
Wallenius Lines has an extensive newbuilding programme to enlarge and
modernise the fleet. The newly delivered ship is the tenth in the ser
ies of car-carriers that have been built by the same Korean shipyard b
etween 1994 and 1999. No fewer than four of them have been delivered t
his year.
Considerable advances have been made in both cargo handling and marin
e equipment since the first Daewoo ship was built, and the vessels hav
e been successively developed and equipped with the very latest equipm
ent and technology. The Daewoo series consists of three generations of
vessels, and New-building No 10 is one of four in the third generatio
n.
Wallenius Lines operates a fleet of 37 modern PCTC vessels, all of wh
ich carry all types of RoRo cargo. The ships are operated in transocea
nic traffic by 50%-owned Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines AS, whose total fl
eet consists of some 70 vessels.
