Overseas-going vessels employ Chinese
In order to save on crew expenses, Korean shipping companies employ Indonesian crews more than any other nationality.
According to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF), foreign sailors on board Korean vessels totaled 7,750 as of the end of last year. Indonesian crews topped with 2,670, followed by Chinese, Vietnamese, Philippine, and crews from Myanmar.
Among overseas-going shipping companies, Chinese sailors outnumbered Indonesian sailors with 476. Sailors from the Philippines numbered 379, followed by sailors from Myanmar at 189, and the Indonesian at 177.
For over-seas fishing vessels, Indonesian crewmembers ranked first with 2,318. Chinese sailors followed with 1,497.
