Hanjin inks on final contract for Longbeach new terminal
Hanjin Shipping inked an official contract for a long-term lease of a new dedicated terminal in Longbeach on March 6.
Hanjin Shipping announced that Choi Won-pyo, senior vice president of Hanjin Shipping, Richard D. Steinke, Port of Long Beach Executive Director, and John Kashiwabara, Long Beach Harbor Board of Commissioners President, signed off on the long-term terminal chartering contract, acquiring exclusive rights to use the new dedicated terminal for 25 years from 2002.
Scheduled for completion in April 2002, this terminal is located on Pier T, a former U.S Naval site covering 375 acres. It will run up-to-date equipment in the terminal, and have better accessibility and stability compared to Pier A. The terminal is larger than PECT (Pusan East Container Terminal), the largest container terminal in South Korea, and is the second largest container terminal in the U.S.
It will be able to accommodate 4 vessels at one time with its 5,000 ft berth (1,530 meters long) and 15.2 meter depth, and carry cargoes from East Asia by rail.
