Who,s Building for Mega Container Vessels over its Capacity of 5,000
TEUs
The Korean two major oceangoing shipping companies are rushing to place
orders for high-speed full container vessels with a handling capacity
of 5,000 TEUs. Hanjin Shipping Co., said they have recently placed
orders with Hanjin Heavy Industries Co., to build two 5,000 TEU-class
container ships.
Hyundai Merchant Marine Co., has also announced that it will place orders
with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., for seven 5,046 TEU-class full
container vessels this year.
The two shipping companies say that the moves are part of their strate-
gies to increase their share of the world shipping market and maximize
productivity.
Hyundai said that a total of 470 billion won would be needed to build
the seven high-speed full container ships With an average speed of
25.6 knots, the ships will not only be the largest but also the
fastest container vessels in the world, HMM’s official said.
Five of the seven ships to be built by HHI, which are to be delivered
from April 1996, will be put into the most active route linking the Far
East and North America.
On the Far East and North America routes, Hyundai Merchant and Hanjin
Shipping are now putting six full container ships with handling capacity
of 4,400 TEUs and 4,024 TEUs respectively.
As of the end of July this year, the number of full container vessels
worldwide with a handling capacity of 4,000 TEUs stood at 53 vessels.
