Kunsan cargoes increasing
It was reported that Port of Kunsan has increased import/export cargoes in fear of recent economic slowdowns.
According to Kunsan Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on Jan. 7, last year's throughput in the Port of Kunsan increased slightly, 2% over 1999 to 11,787,000 tonnes. However, import/export products jumped 12% compared to last year, showing 6,654,000 tonnes. By item, cars, paper, and chemical products led the export flow while imports depended on lumber, cons, pulp and animal feeders. In particular, cars totaled 131,706 units Daewoo Motors accounting for 101,510 units, Hyundai Motors 5,711 units, and Kia Motors 24,198 units.
Vessels numbered 1,521 ocean-going and 3,052 nearsea vessels, equivalent to 1999 levels. Meanwhile gross tonnage weighed in at 22,669,000 tonnes, up 13% over last year, a reflection of increasing vessel sizes.
