Massive dredging in Panama Canal
The Panama Management Office announced on June 21 that the Panama Government would dredge part of it to allow smooth passage of large vessels through the Panama Canal.
The office said that it will dredge out at least 1 meter in some places, and that the construction will last for eight years beginning this October. It also appropriated 1,390 million dollars for construction in 2002.
Since America passed over rights to the canal to Panama on December 31, 1999, 35 vessels use it on a daily basis.
