Pusan Customs reshuffles port security in preparation for World Cup
Pusan and South Kyoungsang province Customs decided to reshuffle the current port guidance system before the Pusan Asian games and World Cup.
According to Pusan Customs, private security guards that protect the port have watched over sailors and port visitors; Pusan Customs has been mostly responsible for patrolling the port and sea.
With the possibility of further terrorist attacks on the US and a Russian sailor's recent carrying of a concealed weapon, Customs is feeling how important its role is in port security and has decided to focus its attention on port security until the World Cup and Pusan Asian games are over next year. Hereafter, Customs will thoroughly enforce inspections of private carriages for ocean-going sailors.
Customs will take action to place restrictions on sailors passing through ports. Customs stated that this is a temporary measure starting from November 1, 2001 and lasting until the end of October of 2002. This is in part due to Customs recognizing its limitations in watching over the ports with its current man-power and facilities. More and more Customs is feeling greater pressure regarding the necessity of strengthening port security. The sailor's association expressed strong dissatisfaction over the new action.
