On-Board Vessel Education Continues to be Highlight for First-Year Emp
This year's on-board vessel education program is proving to be another
success with Hanjin's first-year employees. Just recently, the first
of four groups of vessel trainees returned from Japan. What began in l
ate September, the first group began their week-long training on the 4
,000TEU class container vessel, the Hanjin Marseille, where the vessel
left Hanjin's Kamman terminal in Pusan to call at the Port of Osaka,
Japan. Subsequently, the second group will depart in late October on a
voyage from the Port of Pusan to call at the Port of Hong Kong on Han
jin's largest education vessel, the Hanjin Beijing.
The trainees on-board are given theoretical as well as hands-on experi
ence to study the many parts of the vessel. The crew is given an in-de
pth tour from the engine room up to the navigation deck where they per
form such duties as watch keeping and plotting the vessel's course. Ma
ny have agreed that this vessel program is very helpful in understandi
ng the logistics behind vessel operations.
Not only is it an educational experience, but also a cultural one. Dur
ing their sojourn before leaving Osaka and Hong Kong, they have the op
portunity to meet with their local counterparts at Hanjin's regional o
ffices as well as a brief cultural tour of each city.
Hanjin Shipping continues to dedicate significant resources to the ong
oing training and development necessary for the success of a growing g
lobal shipping company. Hanjin Shipping's On-Board Training & Educatio
n Program was launched in 1993 with two 4,000teu container vessels, th
e Hanjin Marseille and Hanjin Malta, with a third 5,300teu vessel laun
ched in 1997. These vessels are uniquely equipped with specialized tra
ining facilities and full accommodations for our trainees. With lectur
e rooms, an ARPA radar system and simulator, Each year, 350 candidates
, including Hanjin Shipping staff as well as maritime university stude
nts, attend the program.
