First of new class P&O Nedlloyd ship to be named
P&O Nedlloyd Stuyvesant, the first of four new 6800 TEU containerships for P&O Nedlloyd will be named by Mrs. Ingrid Berndsen, the wife of the Chairman of the Executive Board of Royal Nedlloyd and Co-Chairman of P&O Nedlloyd (PONL), in a ceremony at the "ECT Delta Terminal West (DDW)" in Rotterdam tomorrow.
With a length of 299.99 metres and a capacity of 6802 TEU the P&O Nedlloyd Stuyvesant is one of the largest containerships in the world with a service speed of 24.5 knots. She will be deployed in the Grand Alliance's Europe - Far East service and will sail under the Dutch flag.
The ship will be named in honour of Peter Stuyvesant, who was the Dutch Colonial Governor of New-Netherlands from 1645 until 1664. He was born in 1592 at Scherpenzeel, Friesland, in the Netherlands and died in February 1672, in New York State.
Tomorrow's ceremony will be hosted by Lord Sterling of Plaistow, Chairman of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company and Co-Chairman of PONL, and Mr. Haddo Meijer, Chairman of the Executive Committee of PONL.
