Daewoo shipping selected as car ferry operator in Mokpo and Lianyungang
The Daewoo shipping Corp. was selected as the Korean counterpart for Mokpo / Lianyungang car ferry trade.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries announced on May 19 that it chose the Daewoo Shipping Corp. as the Korea operator in the Mokpo / Lianyungang car ferry trade, which Korea and the China Maritime Council agreed to launch in 1995 under a bilateral government.
Kukje Express Ferry, the first chosen operator, abandoned the service even before starting in May 1996, and Daeyang Express Ferry also called off its business due to internal squabbling on April 6, 2001.
The sole applicant for this trade, the Daewoo Shipping Corp., was selected to operate the trade on the condition that it service the trade until at least this September.
If Mokpo / Lianyungang car ferry trade opens, the Honam area centered on Mokpo will have access to the southern part of China, stimulating the West Sea economic bloc. It will also connect to the TCR (Trans China Railroad), linking to several cities in Europe and contributing to Korea's becoming the logistic hub for North East Asia.
