Port of Los Angeles container traffic results for April 2001
The Port of Los Angeles handled 417,420 TEUs during the month of April, up 2.5% as compared to April 2000. (TEU stands for 20-foot equivalent units, maritime terminology used when counting marine cargo containers of varying lengths.)
Imports totaled 210,732 compared to 211,262 in a year-to-year comparison, a decrease of approximately 3%. Exports showed an increase of over 3.3% with the movement of 88,057 TEUs.
Larry Keller, executive director for the Port, commented, "There is something about April! April 2000 was the first month in Port of Los Angeles history that our customers moved 400,000 containers and a year later they've done it again. Further, our customers expect figures for the month of May to be stronger yet, as we get nearer to summer and traditional shipping increases due to the holiday season begin to kick in."
Calendar year figures indicate almost a 6% overall increase in cargo container movement. Fiscal year figures to date (July- April) totaled 3.3 million TEUs.
