Pegasus Project Boosts NYK's E-Commerce System
After years of planning and development, NYK is totally changing the emphasis on its traditional role as an ocean carrier with its "Pegasus project," an advanced new E-commerce system that will enable NYK customers to monitor and interactively manage on line all the logistics of their cargo shipments--anytime, anywhere in the world.
In addition to NYK's currently available on-line cargo tracing and schedule inquiry, printing of bills of lading for North American export cargo will begin in March 2001. The same capability will be available in Europe and Asia within the second quarter. Additional automated, on-line services will become available on the NYK website throughout the year and eventually will encompass complete, global supply-chain management services, including rate inquiries, schedules, booking, cargo tracking, cargo status notification, customized reporting, and more.
Pegasus is not intended simply to replace traditional communications media with the Internet, but to provide our customers with a platform to maximize streamlining their processes.
The open architecture of the new Pegasus system incorporates the most-advanced, object-oriented technology and will allow NYK easy and flexible connectivity with both external and internal systems as well as with other industry portal sites. NYK believes that, from the customers' point of view, the most important aspect of any carrier's site should be the capability to serve the customers' needs, whichever carrier they use. NYK's purpose is to make our connectivity as open and flexible as possible.
With the completion of its new E-Commerce system, NYK will have evolved from its long-time business strategy as primarily an ocean carrier and will continue to provide the most efficient total logistic services worldwide through on-going and aggressive IT development.
