Advent of variable height container
A Korean company has recently introduced a new development in the otherwise static container world; the new container sports an adjustable height.
"Super Corporation" (www.supercorp.co.kr) succeeded in developing and getting into business with a specialized container called, 'the Super-Rack'. The container has a variable height, up to 1.5 meters higher than regular flat rack containers, which are easily disassembled when loading awkward cargoes, such as industrial boilers.
On current conventional vessels, heavy cargoes can not be stacked. Containers with heavy cargoes must be placed at the bottom of a stack with lighter ones above. The new Super-Rack, however, can tolerate heavy cargo containers in stacks as high as five. Further with the new adjustable-height container, vessel space can be more efficiently used by eliminating otherwise dead-space.
The new container will facilitate pre-stuffing and pre-lashing, thereby shortening docking times at ports and hence increasing overall operating efficiencies.
The company has patented the container domestically as well as in the U.S. and Europe. It will put the containers into production for business after passing international standards tests for safety and durability.
