Containers in Kwangyang reach 40% that of Pusan
During the first six months this year, cargoes handled in the container terminal at the Port of Kwangyang marked just below 40% that of those treated in the Kamman Terminal, Pusan.
According to the Korea Container Terminal Authority (KCTA) on July 25, containers in Kwangyang totaled 348,000 TEU, reaching 39.6% that of the Kamman Terminal's 879,831 TEU during the same period.
This figure is an improvement over last year's 33.9%. However, it was still pointed out that the government should prepare more active measures to deal with the situation in general, especially considering that the Kamman Terminal is already handling well over its maximum capacity.
Though the Kwangyang Terminal boasts low wharfage and stevedoring fees as well as better docking conditions compared with the Kamman Terminal, many domestic and overseas shipping companies have avoided calling at Kwangyang.
Both terminals were built in early 1998 to handle 960,000 TEU annually with berths for four 50,000 ton container vessels.
