First Mark IV RoRo Joins Wallenius Wilhelmsen Fleet
MS TAMESIS, the first in a series of fourth generation roll-on/roll-of
f ships of groundbreaking design has joined the Wallenius Wilhelmsen f
leet.
Along with three sister ships to be delivered over the next 10 months,
TAMESIS, was commissioned in 1998 by Wilh.Wilhelmsen ASA of Norway, o
ne of two equal shareholders in Wallenius Wilhelmsen.
The Mark IV RoRo, which was delivered in Korea on April 13 by Daewo Ok
po Shipyard, provides 35% more covered capacity for specialised RoRo c
argo than the previous Mark III design. It is especially well-suited f
or project and other uniqueor heavy lift cargo such as power generator
s, construction and agriculture equipment, railcars, yachts and others
. The vessel is also suitable for carrying cars and has a total capaci
ty of 5,400 cars.
In recent years we have witnessed a marked increase in demand for spec
ialised Ro/Ro capacity, commented Anders Boman, Senior Vice President
Commercial of Wallenius Wilhelmsen. With TAMESIS and its sister ships
still to come, we are showing our commitment and willingness to invest
in this important market segment.
MS TAMESIS is being deployed in Wallenius Wilhelmsen core RoRo Trades:
Far East - US East Coast via Panama-Europe -US East Coast - Australia
/New Zealand via Panama.
As with all ships owned by Wilh.Wilhelmsen ASA, this newest addition n
ame begins with a T. It is the fourth Wilhelmsen ship to be named TAME
SIS, which was the ancient Latin word for the River Thames.
MS TAMESIS has an overall length of 240 metres, a width of 32.26 m, an
d dead-weight of 38,300 tonnes.
