Korea re-elected as director country of IMO 'A' group
Korea was re-elected as director country of the leading shipping country group, 'A group', at the 23rd IMO (International Maritime Organization) general meeting held at its headquarters in London, November 28.
Korean representatives from MOMAF (Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries) attended the meeting and announced that the country was elected as the director country of the A group, composed of 10 leading shipping countries, as including England, Japan, China, and the U.S. The decision was made without a vote because there no other countries entered the group.
Meanwhile Korea has supported domestic specialists to participate in the IMO actively since it was elected into the 'A' group director country first in 2001. It has donated 0.4 million dollars for technical cooperation with developing countries.
According to MOMAF, Korea has elevated its standing in the international maritime community through this advance and garnered stronger international competitiveness, making IMO agreements, rules and operating the IMO in the shipping and shipbuilding areas.
The IMO is a UN organization, setting international standards for shipping and shipbuilding. It has 166 member countries. Korea joined in 1962.
