Hanjin Holds Naming Ceremony for LNG Vessel
Hanjin Shipping held a naming ceremony for a Mambrane LNG vessel on Ju
ly 14 at the Youngdo shipyard in Pusan. It was attended by over 200 pe
ople, including Ham Sok-jae, chairman of the Agriculture and Maritime
Fisheries Council in the National Assembly, Yoo Byoung-guk, an auditor
for the Korea Gas Corporation(KOGAS), Kim Chan-gil, president of Hanj
in Shipping, and Lee Woo-sik, president of Hanjin Heavy Industries.
Yoon Hye-son , wife of the chairman of the Agriculture and Maritime Fi
sheries Council named the vessel "Hanjin Ras Laffan", after Ras Laffan
, a port city in Qatar, Middle East.
Hanjin will now operate the largest LNG ship in the world, built by Ha
njin Heavy Industries. The vessel is 280m long, 43m wide, and 26.2m de
ep. It will provide service speeds of 20.3 knots, and has a 138,400 cu
bic metre capacity.
The Hanjin Ras Laffan was delivered to Hanjin Shipping after the namin
g ceremony and deployed to carry liquified natural gas, a clean non-po
lluting fuel, to the domestic market from Qatar, by 2004.
The Hanjin Ras Laffan transports 65,000 tons per calling or an estimat
ed 650,000 tons annually, equivalent to the amount the entire nation c
onsumes in 20 days.
Hanjin Shipping expects to earn 35 billion won per year with the vesse
