OOCL Celebrates Double Christening of OOCL San Francisco and OOCL Chicago
On 28 August, 2000, Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) celebrated t
he double christening of the OOCL San Fran cisco and the OOCL Chicago.
The two con tainers vessels are the largest ever built by China Shipb
uilding Cor poration (CSBC). The christe-ning ceremony was held at CSB
C shipyard at Kaohsiung, Taiwan.
The 5700-teu container vessels are both 277m in length, with a tonnage
of 66,670 and a service speed of 25 knots. Environmental factors have
been integrated into the design to reduce emissions, increase speed a
nd save energy.
Shortly after the opening speech by Mr. CC Tung, Chairman of OOIL, Mrs
. Shirley Peng, wife of Mr. John Y.K. Peng, Chairman of Maritime Trans
port, Limited and Mrs. Alice King, wife of Mr. Roger King, Director of
OOIL, christened the OOCL San Francisco and the OOCL Chicago, respect
ively. Other honorable guests were Mr. F.Y. Huang, Executive Vice Pres
ident of Chiao Tung Bank, Mr. W.S. Liou, Vice President of CSBC and Mr
. Kingsley Koo, Vice President of American Bureau of Shipping.
The OOCL San Francisco will be deployed in the Asia to Europe Express
(AEE) service while the OOCL Chicago will be deployed in the Super Shu
ttle Express (SSX), running between the USA west coast and the Far Eas
