Tenth Anniversary for Weidong Ferry

Weidong Ferry Co., Ltd, a Korean-Chinese joint corporation, had its 10
th anniversary celebration party on September 20th at the Lotte Hotel
in downtown Seoul. The company was founded in 1990 and has been provid
ing Korea/China car-ferry trade for 10 years. Over 800 relevant figure
s were invited to their anniversary party, including vice Minister of
MOMAF, Hong Seung-ryong and Inchon city Mayor, Choi Ki-sun.
Weidong Ferry commenced their business with China in September 1990,
before any official treaty between the two countries existed. At that
time, the global mood was moving towards escape from Cold War politics
, coinciding with the South Korean northward policy and the Chinese op
en-economy policy. Economically, China decided to adopt a free trade m
arket policy and has been eager to solicit capital from foreign countr
ies. Under these circumstances, direct trade between two countries has
flourished.
With the ten-year-long success of this joint-corporation, Weidong Fer
ry has paved the way for the exchange of the two countries' human and
material resources. It also contributed towards economic development a
nd industrialization in Kyoungin, South Korea, and Shandong, China, wh
ere the ferry called.
For the past 10 years, Weidong Ferry has been servicing Inchon/Weihai
three times a week, and Inchon/Qingdao two times a week, carrying 1.2
million passengers and 300 thousand TEU cargoes.
On January 18th, 2000, the largest and fastest car-ferry in Korea/Chi
na trade, the "New Golden Bridge" was deployed, and upgraded their ser
vice in that trade.

hing international safety standards and opened their internet homepage
