Pyoungtaek container-dedicated quay urgently needed
A container-dedicated quay in Pyoungtaek is urgently needed to boost port activities there.
According to the city of Pyoungtaek, containers are on the rise and container cargoes jumped under the influence of increased trade with China and other Asian countries. This was in part responsible for the Port of Pyoungtaek opening the regular container trade bound for Hong Kong and Qingdao in China last October.
In addition, this August, it will open a new car-ferry trade to Rongyan, while still pushing for new container and car-ferry trades.
According to the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) research report, container cargoes in the Port of Pyoungtaek are expected to amount to 24,000 TEU this year and 414,000 TEU by 2011. It is also evaluated as having enormous potential just by being located in the center of the Yellow Sea economic bloc and backing on the Seoul metropolitan and Chungcheong areas.
Meanwhile, MOMAF (the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) is planning to develop three container berths around by 2006, because of a current lack of containers.
Considering the emerging gigantic Chinese market, it is urgent to build a container-dedicated quay to fulfill those needs. Pyoungtaek is regarded as the gateway in and out of China based on its close proximity to China and logistics savings. The top 10 container ports in China handling container cargoes surpassed 20 million TEU last year, increasing 10 to 16 percent annually on average. Moreover, containers bound from northern Shanghai, close to Pyoungtaek, are expected to number between 11 and 19 million TEU in 2011.
