Yangsan ICD hits cargoes beyond its expectations in last half year
Yangsan ICD (Inland Container Depot) in southeastern Korea has taken a
favorable turn for its management in the last six months, MOMAF revea
led.
Yangsan ICD, which opened last April, has overheated by handling over
328,000 TEU, far overreaching the expected cargo volume of 144,000 TEU
by September.
This figure has come about under abnormal circumstances considering th
at Yangsan ICD is not well equipped with rail systems (scheduled to be
completed by the end of 2002), or private container roads (completion
planned for the end of 2001). In this situation, Yangsan has dealt wi
th 60,000 TEU containers per month. An official in Yangsan ICD anticip
ated that if this trend is maintained, it will control 500,000 TEU by
the end of 2000 and will be on the right track by the second half of 2
001. Breaking down the cargo structure, full containers account for 35
percent of total containers, and empty containers for recycling accou
nt for 65 percent as of September, an official said. At present, there
are only 2 CFSs (Container Freight Station) but they are expected to
increase into 6 or more by the second half of next year, so as to vast
ly increase the number handled, an official added.
If the third city highway construction through Mt. Soojong tunnel in P
usan is finished by the second half of next year, it will shorten tran
sport time between the Port of Pusan and Yangsan ICD, allowing Yangsan
ICD to assume the role of an inland port, and if the rail system is c
ompleted, to supply CFSs at the Port of Pusan in shortage.
